The question I had as a mom
“Are families leaving WCSD for private school, and what does the data actually show?”
WCSD's own enrollment, year over year
Would come from CDE's Annual Enrollment Report / DataQuest, plus the district's own budget documents and demographer reports.
WCSD enrollment by year
A year-over-year enrollment trend line will render here once the district-level figures are pulled and checked.

Private-school enrollment in Contra Costa County
Would come from the National Center for Education Statistics' Private School Universe Survey, which reports county-level private-school enrollment on a two-year cycle.
County private-school enrollment by survey year
A county-level trend will render here once the survey years are pulled. Public and private figures are collected on different cycles, so they need to be aligned carefully before being compared.

What we still need to verify
Every question here has a named source to check. None of them has an answer yet.
- Has WCSD's own enrollment changed since 2019, and if so, in which direction — pulled from CDE's Annual Enrollment Report / DataQuest.
- Has private-school enrollment in Contra Costa County grown over the same period — pulled from NCES's Private School Universe Survey.
- If both moved, do they move together? A district can lose students to housing costs, birth rates, or families moving away without a single family choosing private school.
- How much of any shift is inter-district transfer within public schools rather than public-to-private — a separate dataset, and a separate question.
