The question I had as a mom

How do we teach kids to think for themselves when AI can give them an answer in seconds?

Technology should help children think harder — not give them a reason to stop thinking.

What AI actually is

A jargon-free explanation a parent can read in two minutes.

When people say "AI" in a classroom conversation, they almost always mean generative AI — tools like ChatGPT or Gemini that write, summarize, or answer on demand. These aren't like a calculator, which gives one correct answer. Generative AI is a prediction engine: trained on enormous amounts of text, it learned to guess the next most likely word, over and over, until it sounds like an answer.

That distinction matters because these tools are built to sound confident, not to be right. They also tend to be agreeable — quicker to go along with a kid's idea than a good teacher would be — which matters for the critical-thinking sections below.

Most require users to be 13 or older, though as Common Sense Media notes, they usually have no reliable way to confirm anyone's age. Plenty of younger kids are already using them, whether or not a district has decided how to handle that yet.

What parents should know

The handful of things worth understanding before the dinner-table conversation.

The biggest surprise in the research isn't that kids are using AI — it's how much more they're using it than parents realize. National surveys find more than two-thirds of kids and teens already use AI regularly, compared with under half of parents. If you assume this hasn't touched your household yet, it's worth asking your kid directly.

Parents and kids also see schoolwork differently: most young people describe using AI for homework as normal, even encouraged; most parents call it unacceptable. That gap is worth a real conversation, not an assumption in either direction.

There's genuine common ground too. 62% of kids and teens and 70% of parents both worry about what AI is doing to creativity. And on privacy, parents and kids are nearly in lockstep — 84% of parents and 76% of kids and teens worry about AI misusing kids' data. That's not a vague fear; it's a concrete question worth asking about any tool a school adopts: what happens to my child's data?

Questions to ask at home

  • Where did it get something wrong — and how did you catch it?
  • Would you have used it the same way if you had to show your work to your teacher?
  • What's one thing you double-checked yourself instead of taking its first answer?

How students might use AI

Where these tools can support learning, and where they can short-circuit it.

There's a real, useful version of this and a hollow one, and the difference isn't the tool — it's what it replaces.

The useful version

Asking AI to explain a concept a different way after a first explanation didn't land, brainstorming angles on an essay before writing it, or checking a finished answer against another source. In each case, the thinking still happened; the tool supported it.

The hollow version

Asking AI to produce the finished product and turning that in as the work. The simplest version of this line for a family conversation is the difference between using AI to check your work and using it instead of doing the work.

Age-appropriate critical-thinking skills

What 'thinking for yourself' looks like in kindergarten versus high school.

"Thinking for yourself" doesn't look the same at six as it does at fourteen, and the research on AI backs that up.

Elementary school

The guidance is consistent: limited use, and always alongside a parent or caregiver — not handed to a child to use alone. The concern isn't that the tool will say something scary; it's that it will agree with almost anything a young child types, which is the opposite of the productive struggle — getting something wrong, then figuring out why — that actually builds problem-solving skills at that age.

Middle & high school

Supervised use for schoolwork and creative projects becomes more reasonable. The better question at that age isn't 'did you use AI,' it's 'can you explain this back to me without it open' and 'where did it get something wrong?' If a teenager can answer both, the tool supported their thinking. If not, it replaced it.

Every age, no exceptions

AI is not a substitute for a trusted adult, especially for anything emotional. These tools consistently miss real warning signs — depression, anxiety, disordered eating — that a parent, counselor, or teacher would catch.

Media literacy

How kids learn to evaluate sources — human or machine.

Before AI, it's worth knowing where kids started. In a national Stanford study of more than 3,400 high schoolers, 90% got no credit on four of six basic tasks that just asked them to evaluate a source online — and 96% didn't think to check whether a website had a financial conflict of interest behind it. Out of the entire study, only three students managed to trace a viral, faked video back to where it actually came from.

That's the baseline generative AI is landing on top of. It doesn't create the media-literacy gap; it raises the stakes on one that already existed, because now the content itself — not just the sharing of it — can be machine-generated.

The most useful classroom approach isn't "spot the deepfake" as a party trick. It's teaching kids to ask why something is in front of them at all — why this result, why this feed, why this answer — before asking whether it's fake. That question travels: it works on a search result, a social post, or a chatbot's answer.

At home, the same idea scales down easily: have your kid ask an AI tool something they already know well, and look together at where it gets it wrong. It turns "don't trust everything AI says" from a warning into something they've actually practiced.

How teachers might use AI

Planning, feedback, and where professional judgment stays in charge.

Where this works well, AI stays in a support role: helping a teacher plan a lesson, personalize practice for different students, draft feedback faster, or make material more accessible — with the teacher reviewing everything before it reaches a student. Professional judgment, and the relationship between a teacher and their students, stays in charge.

Where it doesn't work is on the enforcement side. Districts that have leaned on AI-detection software to catch AI-written homework have generally found the tools unreliable enough to erode trust rather than build it — flagging honest students and missing dishonest ones. The more durable approach redesigns how work is assessed so it rewards showing your thinking and being upfront about how a tool was used, rather than trying to catch students after the fact.
